  1. Thank you very much for your nutrition section on your web page. I started cooking for my dog as she got older and had senior cognitive decline and would only eat roasted chicken fed by hand. I am now a first time puppy parent and want to give him good nutrition, and feed him Taste of the Wild supplemented with whole foods.
Have you had the opportunity to evaluate Buckwheat as a food source for dogs? It isn't really wheat, more of a seed that has many preparations. I made a kong stuffing of 1 jar natural peanut butter, 1 can garbonzo beans, and 1 container coconut yogurt. I think a little bit of buckwheat flour could turn this into a biscuit that is a bit sturdier and carry in a treat pouch. I have tried to cook with garbonzo bean flour and it doesn't have much structure so need a bit of support.

    1. Hi,

I have had the opportunity to evaluate both buckwheat and Taste of the Wild so I will give you some recommendations on both.

Taste of the Wild (example - Dry Food High Prairie Puppy)
Get your puppy off of it ASAP. Taste of the Wild (made by the Diamond Food Processing) is full of carcinogens and toxins of which ethoxyquin in their ocean fish meal is just one such carcinogen http://ottawavalleydogwhisperer.blogspot.ca/2013/02/fish-fish-meal-and-ethoxyquin-danger-do.html

High up in the list of ingredients is 'egg product' egg product is an ingredient in many lower grade dog food products (lower grade is not always predicated by price! as you know Taste f the Wild is not cheap to buy - but it is an inferior product). Egg product is made from waste material that cannot be used in human grade food production. It is a cheap source of often rancid, foul smelling, poor protein used to pump up protein levels in dog food that does not contain enough actual meat to provide enough protein.

The probiotics that they put into the food (dried Enterococcus faecium fermentation product, dried Lactobacillus acidophilus fermentation product, dried Lactobacillus casei fermentation product, dried Lactobacillus plantarum fermentation product, dried Trichoderma longibrachiatum fermentation extract) are all dead and therefore have zero health benefits for your puppy.

I would suggest you switch to a better dog food (grain free) such as Orijin, Acana, Evo. What ever dog food you use - you should add additional Omega-3 fatty acids, probiotics (i.e. yogurt) to your dog's - you can read my articles on fatty acids, yogurt and probiotics.

Buckwheat like all other grains are not a good source of nutrition for dog - grains can cause major health issues for dogs. Grains are the seed of the plant, no different than the seed of the wheat grass. A dog's GI tract is not designed to process grains. Have you tried coconut flour?

      Cheers, Karen

  2. Karen- I'm trying to take in your wealth of information that you provide here. I see a side list of topics, I'm particularly interested in the label Toxins in dogs avoiding cancer (4), when I click on that label or any it takes me to one of your articles, but I can't figure out how to get to the rest, I'm assuming that there are 4 total articles with that label. I searched your index but didn't see a topic on Cancer. Thanks in advance for helping to find all the information that you have spent so much time on and been so generous in sharing.

    1. Hi Shawna - most of the articles I write regarding nutrition and health deal with and/or touch on avoiding the development of cancer therefore I do not bother tagging them all as 'cancer'.

Note -

1.0 Use of Foods, Herbs, Nutraceuticals and Alternative Medicines:

When choosing to use any of the items or protocols in the article above, it is your responsibility to ensure safe use of the item/protocol. Food, herbs, nutraceuticals and alternative medicines all have drug interactions, most have health issue contradictions, some have side effects. Use of substances and protocols are your responsibility. Prior to use of any substance or protocol make sure you do your research - check for all cautions, contradictions, interactions, side effects. If in doubt do not use the substance or protocol. If the substance, or protocol is contradicted for your animal do not use. If your animal has an underlying condition you are not aware of substances may conflict with that condition.

2.0 The Real Meaning of Holistic…

Food, herbs, nutraceuticals and alternative medicines are NOT ‘holistic’ they are a substance and MAY, or may NOT be ‘NATURAL’. It is important to keep in mind that the supplement industry is just as unethical as BigPharma, the Food and Pet Food Industry, and unfortunately many veterinarians.

If you use a ‘natural’ substance (i.e. an herb) you are using a natural substance, this is not synonymous with holistic.

Holistic is a way of approaching life, and within that - overall health, and wellbeing.

Please do not expect a natural substance to miraculously remedy a health or behavioral situation. A natural substance may be used to treat symptoms. However, if the factors causing the underlying issue are not properly identified, analyzed and addressed you do not have a remedy.

Remedy requires a comprehensive approach that identifies root cause, seeks to remove items that trigger, cause or otherwise contribute to issues, and builds a complete, and detailed approach to immediate treatment, remedy, and maintenance of long-term health = holistic.

I offer extensive consultation services - Holistic Diet, Nutrition Wellness and Holistic Behavioral, for people that are serious about looking after their dogs and cats holistically. If you want to engage my services you can contact me via email or phone.
